7 tips for better presentations – a video post!

For today’s post I thought I’d change pace a bit and give you a little bit of something different. Today I want to offer you a video post I put together recently.

It seems a lot of people are moving to video posts on their blogs or are talking about public speaking of some variety, so I thought, as it is essentially my day job, that I would offer some advice and tips to help.

As this is my first video post, I’d love you to let me know what you think in the comments after it’s finished.

So without futher ado, today’s featured presentation: 7 tips for better presentations.

Note: It’s in 2 parts by the way. Enjoy!

So what did you think? What presentation experiences do you have?

  1. Really good to see you in action, Ben. Excellent tips for presenting. Having given over a thousand paid, professional presentations, I can totally relate to your advice. For all those brave souls getting into speaking – just keep doing it – again and again. The more you do, the easier it gets.

    Best to you, Robin :)

  2. Thank Robin – really glad you enjoyed it.

I love speaking in public now. I used to be really nervous about speaking but now it's second nature.

  3. Some great advice here Ben. What type of information or subject do you teach to school children if I may ask?

  4. Hi Marc

I mainly teach apsirational and motivational workshops as topics like revision and study skills, creative thinking and enteprise thinking skills, teambuilding, communication skills and how people can become successful.

I'm hoping to start teaching Tang Soo Do when I've graduated to black belt later next year

  5. I gotta say, you're a natural in front of the camera, Ben!

Awesome job and I really can connect with making it personal and make it fun and most of all enjoying the experience because you really should strive to do that. Enjoy the experience yourself and allow everyone watches it to naturally enjoy it as well.

    Looking forward to more videos.

  6. Thanks Eric – more Videos will be coming in the future don't worry.

  7. hi ben

whats going on? First james, then jen now you. is there some kind of wave going on and i dont know about lol!!!

on a final note you look like stephen mulhern of britains got more talent. i love him to bits, infact I'd rank him better than Ant and Dec on BGT(my opinion).
anyway you have a lovely day

  8. I really liked this one, Ben. You need to be doing more video! ;)

  9. Hey Ben!
Great to see you on vid Ben! Love the message and you are a natural, it came across really well. :)
The video was great, loved the music and how you arranged it (how did you get the titles between sections btw?).
    Congrats! Awesome job.

    Hi Ben

I think you've demonstrated the key element for making a good presentation – a passion for your subject. If we have that passion, other things fall into place naturally. You don't read the PowerPoint slides, you do move around, you do engage your audience and you tell your own stories.

If you don't have passion for your subject, why are you doing it!

    Good job.

  11. “Not everyone is as talented as me and Gary Vaynerchuk..”

Nice! Really enjoyed this mate. I agree with everyone else, you need to do more of these. Your personality definitely comes out more in video form.

  12. Very nice videos. Really helped. Thanks

  13. Ben,

Great to see you on video. I loved the presentation, very clear and confident. I'm sure you're enjoying much success with the young people you are working with.

Some great tips, as you say different people will give you different tips; I guess you've got to go with what suits you!

    Regards

    Paul

  14. Hi Ben,
Great video post and set of tips.

I think you are right to emphasise relax and rehearse and think that these can be helped if people really know (and are comfortable with) their stuff…….knowing your stuff will help you relax and rehearsing will help you get you message across better which will in turn improve your knowledge of your stuff.

Also, I remember learning a couple of things, that you might like, about presenting that have helped me.
    1. Good teachers instruct and great teachers inspire; and
    2. Presenting and training don't work. The work comes from what actions are taken as a result of the speech/talk/training etc

Therefore, great presenters focus on what they want people to do as a result of their talk and not just the content.

Finally, I like the fingers to nose and ear exercise. I will be using that in future :) Good fun.

    Adrian

  15. I really liked putting a voice and face to the amazing articles of yours, Ben.

These are some great presentation tips that you provided. I must admit I haven't had to do a presentation in a long while, but if I ever do, I'll come back to your tips.

    Thanks,
    Karen

  16. Hey Ayo!

It's ok you haven't missed the boat. I actually wanted to video before everyone else they just copied my idea! (Mind readers!!!!)

Chuffed that you liked the video. I'll email you with how I do it if you want?

  17. Cheers Henri – really enjoyed your video the other day too.

  18. Thanks Jen! Was a bit weird to start with but after that it was like being at work.

I did the whole video in Windows Live Movie Maker (it's free). It's all editing in there.

  19. Yeah passion is a must. Having seen you present workshops it's obviously something I get from you ;-)

Story telling is a bit part of a great presentation

  20. Thought you'd like that line Ian!

    Cheers for the support

  21. Glad you enjoyed it Nishant

  22. Thanks Paul

Yeah there's lots of advice out there about presentation skills, you just have to find what works for you as an individual

  23. Hey, Ben, cool video. Loved the music and the production and had to laugh at your saying you needed to show us your good looking face – even if it is true!!

Although I'm not doing so many at the moment, I have done lots of presentations in my time. The one thing that I think is key is engaging your audience. That helps to keep it active and moving and people don't go to sleep if you're encouraging them to be present.

    Thank you.

  24. Hey Adrian – glad you liked it.

Yeah I always find that the presentations I do with work that are amazing are the ones where the kids go away inspired. It's not something that happens with every group or with particular pieces of content but is more something that occurs when everything is clicking if you get me.

  25. Thanks Karen – really pleased you enjoyed my videos :-)

  26. Yeah completely Christine – Audience engagement is so important in any kind of presentation that you give whether it's a video post, speaking in public, or delivering a talk to a group of work collegues.

  27. matthewneedham

Is this the new Gary V? Finally discovered how to comment on your site via iPhone!

  28. Hey Ben,
I agree that it all needs to click and I think you are right in your video when you say that its never as bad as you imagine it was. So, true. We are our own worst critics.

The other point I was trying to make is that there is a danger when putting a talk together that I (I know I do it sometimes)/We focus too much on the content and not enough of what we want to happen as a result of the talk or what we want people to do afterwards.

    Make sense?

    Adrian

  29. It's so weird seeing you minus hat! Sorry, had to get that out of the way. lol. Really nice seeing you work though; some great advice there. Need to see how I can incorporate that into my own videos (you don't see what I'm doing, so that helps, but confidence etc would have to come through in my voice… and I'm assuming non-frantic mouse movements!).

    Thanks for the advice Ben.

  30. Oh for sure

One thing I say at the end of everyone of my workshops is that I can come and say all of the great things I can and make the students feel like that they can achieve anything but they have to take the step to put it in to action. They have to take responsibility for where they go from the moment they leave me

  31. Nah! I have more hair than Gary.

    Cool how'd you manage it?

  32. Hey Heather – I thought about the wearing the hat but changed my mind at the last minute.

You can incoraporate these kind of tips in to visual videos like you're talking about – you just need to think outside the box a bit to do it. If I can help shoot me an email.

  33. It's cool seeing you without, just did a double-take lol.

Seem to be doing ok so far, I'll brainstorm a bit and get back to you. :)

  34. Great to see you in action Ben… video blogging is catching on a bit… but nothing wrong with that. It gives us all a chance to connect with people on a different level beyond the printed word.

    Great tips.

  35. Yeah I wanted you all to see me in my natural state. Want to move on to more challenging topics soon
